Missio Dei
Rev. Benson Omondi, Team Leader, AEE Kenya, had the honour to minister to JKUAT Christian Union Students on the topic Missio Dei a Latin word that translates to ‘Mission of God’. The message was aimed at sensitising and teaching them that the mission of saving people belongs to God and therefore we should allow the power of God to convict the people we are ministering to.He highlighted Ephesians 2:4 -5 to remind us that Christ found us even when we were lost in sin emphasising that we did not find God but He found us. Two students took time to give us feedback on the session.
“ It has been an honour having Rev Benson come and minister to us. We invited him partly because he has been here before and we were assured and confident that he would deliver on this second lesson and also because he works as the CEO of a missional organisation as he would be better placed to handle issues missions.
The expectations or rather the objectives were for him to tackle the necessity of the gospel in terms of missions, what is our role as believers, and touch a bit on the Trinity. I believe that our expectations were met in that we got to see that it is not our mission but God’s mission; we are only custodians and so He entrusts it to us which we see throughout scriptures placing emphasis on the great commission. He also spoke on the issue of sin which affects everyone and it was a new way of looking into how we can evangelise to people of all class and statue. Probably the only thing that would need clarification and more time to delve on would be the Holy Trinity.
I would say the message was timely and as we look forward to the Love Nairobi Festival Mission, I feel liberated from the notion that says , If you evangelise to a person and they don’t give their lives to Christ it’s on you. It feels good to learn that salvation is purely God’s timing, God drawing us to his son Jesus Christ. This takes off the credit from me and puts it on God. “I serve in an evangelistic team that goes out for missions particularly in Nairobi and its called NAIRET and by God’s grace I am the arts director. My expectation was to get more information about missions that I didn’t know before. I am a firm believer that when it comes to missions, you can never really know it all. Thankfully my expectations were met! I learnt about the relational missions or method of evangelism where you get to a person’s level and relate to them as you bring out the Gospel. I also got inspired by the story Rev. Benson shared about his brother, that mission is truly the work of God and when He sends us, we should go with that understanding.
I loved how he broke down the chapter that is Matthew 28:19-20 that even though this is God’s work, He desires to partner with us in it and he actually partners with us where the Bible says ‘I am with you always to the close of the age.’ My takeaway from this has been to never lose the zeal or the heart for the lost for it’s my duty and my commission. I am really excited for the Love Nairobi Festival because it offers me an opportunity to populate God’s kingdom.
