The Student Well-Being and Life Skills Program (SWLSP) has significantly benefited schools, as evidenced by the positive transformations observed across various institutions. Mrs. Beatrice Ogollo from Ndururuno Mixed Secondary School, who oversees guidance and counseling, shared her testimony regarding the program’s substantial impact on student discipline and overall school culture.
“It is impossible to identify any internal change within an individual unless it is reflected in their behavior. This has been the case in our school; we have witnessed a shift towards better morals. I have received appreciation from both the discipline master and class teachers, noting that student performance and discipline have improved following the introduction of this program,” Mrs. Ogollo reported.
Beatrice also highlighted the commitment of the teachers to ensure the program’s success. “After the facilitation training that took place in June 2024, I trained my fellow teachers to assist in implementing the program. With fifteen streams in our school, it was essential to have more facilitators involved. Thanks to the support from our principal, the facilitators have effectively conducted the life skills sessions every Wednesday at 8:00 AM across the school,” she said.
“I have also consistently taken the initiative to provide copies for each session, helping us overcome the challenge of lacking enough facilitator guides and life skills manuals,” she added.
“This program has been instrumental in encouraging students to open up and seek help. Providing students with guides has allowed them to reflect on their lives, leading to increased openness in sharing their struggles, which has resulted in higher academic performance,” she acknowledged.
“Topics like time management have been particularly important. As an institution, we emphasize that each student creates their own timetable at the beginning of each term, setting goals based on what we discussed during the goal-setting sessions,” she reflected.
Madam Beatrice expressed her gratitude for the extended period allocated to the program’s implementation. “I would like to acknowledge the grace period that allowed us to run this program for two years. This extension enabled us to complete the curriculum, and currently, we are revisiting topics that require additional emphasis. I am grateful to AEE Kenya and the sponsors of this program. Many blessings to you,” she concluded.
