Community Transformation Group changes Naomi’s saving habit.
Kibera women Empowerment Program (KWEP) has continued to give hope to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged women in Kibera slums. Jackline Naomi Okwako who is currently a beneficiary of the program expressed her gratitude to have had a door opened for her in reaching her dream of becoming a dress maker.
“My name is Naomi Jackline Okwako, a 33 year old mum of three children. I have been a resident of Kibera slums for five years. I came here as a way to be at close proximity with my place of work. Unfortunately, both my husband and I lost our jobs when I relocated to this place. My husband decided to do menial jobs, paying him 115.05 USD monthly. This has kept us in a state of want, since our children go to school going, and balancing the pay between basic needs and rent cost has not been easy.” Jackline said.
“ I had tried before to enroll for a Diploma in Marketing but due to financial constrains, I did not go any further than the first module neither did I do the exam. This send me to a state of desperation. It is then at that state of desperation when I got to know about Kibera Women Empowerment program. Interestingly enough this is a skill that I have always wanted to learn. I am committed to learning tailoring.” She expressed.
Just within two months period Naomi is glad that she has been able to make a difference in her family in terms of clothing and as well make some income. “During this period, I have been able to make a short for my child which could cost me much if someone had to sew it”, she said. Additionally, she has been able to make a dress and two skirts which as well could have costed her much. “I am amazed that recently I made a shirt for a customer and made 300 Kenyan shillings.
Consequently, I am convinced that after this course I will be able to start my own dress making business and start contributing for the good of my family.” She hoped.
Despite a few challenges that Naomi has been experiencing she is determined that she will overcome. “The sewing machines are few which calls for sharing among ourselves. However, I appreciate the oneness, unity and heart of sharing which has helped us at least beat the huddle. I have kept it in mind to press on until the end.” She promised.
Naomi acknowledged the discipline of saving that has been inculcated in her by the creation of the Community transformation groups. “ I am happy that I have been able to beat every drawback as far as savings is concerned. Every Friday we do have a meeting with my fellow women in giving 100 Kenya Shillings. Although it is even tough to get the amount but I have learned that everything needs discipline even in savings. I believe that through this I will be able to save for my financial freedom.” Naomi said.
