Empowering women and celebrating the journey of Kibera Women’s Graduates.

The Kibera Women’s Empowerment Program graduation held on 9th December 2024, was a remarkable moment for the women as they reflected on their six-month journey. The journey was marked by determination and persistence, with the reality that many of the women are bread winners in their families and had to overcome significant challenges to attend the entire training sessions. We also included Trauma Healing and Biblical Empowered worldview as part of the training to equip the women and prepare them for the market place.

Some of the women who came for this program depend on menial jobs to be able to put food on the table. Melline Akinyi never imagined herself sewing clothes, it was something she had planned or thought possible. However, through the empowerment program, she learned to confidently sew dresses, skirts and shirts, turning a once unimaginable skill into a reality.

With her newfound expertise, Melline says “ I am ready to leave behind my work of washing clothes for others and pursue a future as skilled seamstress”. Her journey to financial independence and empowerment is a testament to the transformative impact of this program, bringing hope and opportunity to women in Kibera.

Elizabeth was also among the women who graduated from the program she says that her life feels transformed. “Before joining the program, I faced constant financial struggles and lacked the confidence to pursue my dreams. But today, I stand proud, equipped with new skills and a renewed sense of purpose”. She says.

Through the program, Elizabeth learned financial and practical skills that enabled her to start a small tailoring business. “I can now be able to earn my own income and support my family,” she says with a smile. Elizabeth also highlights the personal growth she experienced. “This program gave me more than just skills; it gave me confidence and hope for the future. I feel empowered to face challenges and take on new opportunities.”

Her message to other women is clear “If you’re struggling and wondering where to start, this program is for you. It has the power to change your life just like it changed mine.” Elizabeth’s story is a testament to how programs like this can empower women to rise above their circumstances, creating ripple effects of change in their families and communities.
