Empowering Young Mothers

Elizabeth Aidi is a young mother from Kibra who found support and guidance in a group of other young mothers facing similar challenges. The group provides a safe space for them to share their experiences and explore ways to overcome the obstacles they face.

Elizabeth became pregnant twice while in high school. Sadly, she lost her first child in her first year. The second pregnancy, in her third year, left her feeling lost and depressed. “My father’s angry outbursts contributed to my depression,” Elizabeth shared. She decided to drop out of school to focus on caring for her newborn child, who is now two years old.

While at the young mothers’ group, Elizabeth learnt about the Kibra Women Empowerment Program. She was interested in the dressmaking skills offered and hoped it would help her earn a living.

“When my parents learned about my progress in the dressing-making course, they were overjoyed,” Elizabeth said. “My mother expressed her excitement and mentioned that she wanted me to make her a dress.”

Elizabeth is grateful for what she has learned through the program, including how to make skirts, shorts, dresses, and tops. She is also proud of her ability to make bags of different sizes.

“I was amazed when our trainer taught us how to make bags,” Elizabeth said. “I had never imagined that I could make something like that. It gave me confidence and showed me that I am capable of achieving my goals.”

Elizabeth expressed her gratitude to the supporters of the program for its impact on her life and the lives of other young women in Kibra. She hopes that the program will continue to help many young women who are struggling and may be involved in drug addiction.
